Art Tour

Masterpieces of world art

The Neue Pinakothek art gallery

A walking tour of one of Munich’s finest art galleries.

With six major and many smaller galleries, Munich has one of the finest art collections of any European city. Close to the centre of town is an area known as the Kunstareal, “the Art District”, which is home to a number of internationally renowned galleries that showcase centuries of western art, from the middle ages to the most recent contemporary work. Our tour focuses on one of the most celebrated of these galleries – the Neue Pinakothek, originally opened in the 19th century as Europe’s first contemporary art gallery, and which today houses a magnificent collection of art running from the mid-18th to the beginning of the 20th century.

The 19th century was an era of huge excitement and revolution in the visual arts in which many of our modern ideas about art were born. This was the century that began with great landscape painters such as Constable and ended with seminal figures of modern art such as Van Gogh. The intervening period saw great movements in art such as Romanticism, Art Nouveau and Impressionism. World-famous work by key figures such as Turner, Rodin, Cézanne, Gauguin, Monet, Munch, Klimt and Picasso and more are on display in the gallery. To spend just a few hours touring the rooms of the Pinakothek is to be exposed to some of the most beautiful and inspiring achievements of human creativity you may ever see.

A striking example of this is Van Gogh’s Sunflowers, one of the most famous paintings in the world. We’ll explain the painting and tell the story of Vincent Van Gogh’s tragic life as you stand inches away from one of the iconic images of world culture.

Your guide will lead you on a tour through the gallery, explain the major works, answer your questions, and also give you time to inspect the rooms for yourself.
